LEDs also run cool and therefore do not require expensive ducting and heat control systems so that you don't have to worry about overheating.
Another great benefit of using LED's other than saving on your electricity bill is the added bonus of being able to position the lamps very close to your plants, using less space and not posing the risk of scorching your plants leaves, which we find always helps when growing plants!
Using LED Grow Lights to grow plants is fast becoming a very attractive option when you consider the benefits against the slightly higher initial purchase. But get past this and it's clear to see that you'll quickly cover your costs and start saving money and enjoying the benefits of switching to LED Technology.
How Much Light?
Plants generally require about 150-200 Watts of LED light per sq. meter of vegetation, which equates roughly to a 600 Watt HID Bulb.
LED Grow Lights are perfect for growing all types of plant from Chillies & Tomatoes to Garden Herbs and are particularly suited around the home, where traditional lamps would not be ideal due to their size, heat and noisy ballasts.
The amount of light given off by a HID bulb tends to decline over increased usage, yet still consumes the same power. LEDs have a much greater lifespan, consuming around 25% of what traditional HID systems use.
What About LED Grow Lights Vs. Traditional HID Grow Lights?
If you know a bit about traditional HID grow lights, then you'll know that the red spectrum light produced by High Pressure Sodium (HPS) bulbs is more suited to the fruiting stage of plant growth, compared to Metal Halide (MH) bulbs which produce more blue light which is more suited to vegetative growth. LEDs contain a chemical substrate which, depending on type, can be tuned to produce very accurate wavelengths of light for use in plant growth, meaning that they can produce very impressive results and cater for the different stages of plant growth.
Many LED grow lights are made up of an array of assorted Blue and Red LEDs in certain arrangements and ratios, dependent on requirement, although most have been arranged to produce very good results throughout all stages of plant growth.
